At DTG Recycle’s material recovery facilities, most carpet is made from Nylon 6 or Nylon 66, and PET , or Polyethylene Terephthalate, which is a type of polyester fiber used to manufacture many carpets today because of its low cost. It is made from PET chips derived from recycled plastic containers and bottles. We use a device that shoots a beam of light into the materials and can designate which type of material the carpet is made from. Nylon 6 and 66 are sorted and baled and shipped to vendors to shave and make new Nylon products or carpets. PET carpet, having been recycled previously from bottles, is shredded and used as an absorbent material at stormwater decant and petroleum reclaiming facilities.
